EBL (eBook Library) program

May 12, 2014

CARLI, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries of Illinois, has entered a pilot project to provide over 29,000 ebook titles in the humanities and social sciences to JKM and the other 85 I-Share libraries. Here’s how it works:

Search either the “JKM holdings” or “All I-Share Libraries” online catalog.  If your search results include a title in the EBL (eBook Library), you have found an ebook that is available to you. Please note that ebooks not part of this PDA Pilot Project are not available to JKM patrons because of licensing restrictions that limit the use of those ebooks to patrons of the owning library.

Click on “Get it online.”  The EBL welcome page will appear. Select 'JKM Library Trust' and click 'Go.'

You'll be prompted for your off-campus username and password (very likely not the same as your JKM/I-Share username/password), even if you are on campus. Click 'Login.' The Details/Contents/Bookmarks screen for the title will appear.

To read the item, click on Read Online (Available). You may view a title for 5 minutes in a 24-hour period before a prompt appears to request a loan. Before you can request a loan, you must download Adobe Digital Editions here.

Ebooks will have a 7 day “loan” period.

You may view the book’s content online, or you may download it or print parts of it.

The ebook texts are searchable.

There is no limit on the number of users who may use a book simultaneously; however, these eBooks should not be used for local course reserves.

CARLI will actually purchase titles after 9 short loans have occurred. [Before that, the ebooks are not owned by CARLI or JKM.]

This service is not available through the mobile device interface to the JKM or I-Share catalogs.
